As a kid, I remember my mom creating scavenger hunts for us. Later when I became a mom, I would do the same for my own kids. Not a birthday or special event would go by that we wouldn’t create a scavenger hunt just for fun. We’d also go outside regularly, coming up with our own list of things to find and scavenger hunts to do. And this is where the idea of The Ultimate Book of Scavenger Hunts started.
There’s something completely magical about going on a scavenger hunt and looking for items or trying to solve clues as you go. It’s the thrill of the unknown and the gamification of it all. You can’t wait to find the next item.
This book has been so fun for me to write, and my kids (now teens) have weighed in as well. It includes 42 total scavenger hunts and hundreds of items to find.
Check out the scavenger hunt categories in The Ultimate Book of Scavenger Hunts.
- Search for Animals
- Check Out the Neighborhood
- Have a Backyard Adventure
- Explore the Wild
- Discover Nature’s Palette
- Take a Trip
- Go at the Right Time
My favorite thing about this book is that it’s not just a list of items. Each scavenger hunt has fun facts and “Did you know?” type info so kids can learn as they go. I spent a lot of time on these facts to make them fun and unique. So I hope they help encourage you and your family to take some time to learn about and observe what’s around you.

You can get a nature walk scavenger hunt for free by signing up for my newsletter. It’s not as involved as the hunts in the book (shorter lists and no facts), but it’s a fun way to get outside and explore. It’s so easy to go through the motions of our day without really thinking about what’s around us—I’m definitely guilty of this. And as idealistic as this might sound, I truly hope this book helps kids and families slow down a bit and enjoy the journey. There are so many amazing things out there to see and discover. So let’s take the time to notice.
